2015 - Brunello di Montalcino: Black cherry and black currant fruit is accented by tobacco, earth and mineral flavors in this sleek yet dense red. Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2042

2013 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: This is rich, with plum, cherry, spice, soy and iron flavors, supported by a spine of vibrant acidity and refined tannins. Firm yet fluid, fading gracefully on the long, fruit- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2040

2011 - Brunello di Montalcino: Intriguing aromas of cherry, soy and Szechuan peppercorngive way to cherry and cedar flavors in this elegant red. The core of cherry builds as this persists on the finish.
95/100
2010 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: Pure cherry, rose and raspberry aromas and flavors are expressive in this complex, ripe Brunello. Hints of leather, tobacco, mineral and spice lay in wait, but this is all about the fresh fruit at this stage. Very harmonious, yet with plenty of structure. Long on the finish. Best from 2017 throught 2032.
94/100
Cherry and raspberry fruit meets wild herb, eucalyptus and underbrush aromas and flavors in this dense, muscular red. All the elements are there, but this needs time to integrate. The fresh finish is long, echoing woodsy tobacco notes.

2019 - Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve: The bottle of La Gerla with the black label reveals a 360-degree bouquet with generous fruit, dark currant, petrichor, wet slate and a mix of rosemary and grilled herb. This wine presents a classic Brunello bouquet that dovetails into medium fruit weight and very fine, grippy tannins. Production is limited to 6,320 bottles this year.
94/100
2019 - Brunello di Montalcino: This Brunello has spicy, dried fruit with blackcurrant, pinecone, juniper berry and a hint of medicinal herb or camphor ash. The oak comes through clearly in the form of mulled spice or crushed clove. This Brunello is rather streamlined on the mid-palate, and although there is some mild chalkiness to the tannins, they are almost approachable now. Production is 40,000 bottles.
93/100
2018 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: This wine shows warm-vintage characteristics with baked fruit and prune. Those mature fruit sensations feed nicely into the wine's medium-weight texture. The finish is not too long, and there is a dusty or brittle quality to the tannins that is commonly found in wines from the 2018 vintage. Only 3,775 bottles were made.
88/100
2021 - Rosso di Montalcino: Focused primarily on freshness and red fruits, the La Gerla 2021 Rosso di Montalcino presents immediate tones of dried cherry, redcurrant and dried raspberry. The wine is simple and chunky on the mid-palate, thanks to a rather raw quality of young, chewy fruit. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
92/100
2018 - Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve: The La Gerla 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve also reveals a thicker and more concentrated side similar to the Brunello annata. I would venture that that thickness is even taken a step further with more texture and heaviness that you notice on the palate. That powerful, full-bodied approach is accompanied by ripe cherry, blackberry, cured spice and leather. There is a point of sour fruit on the close. This is a limited production of 6,137 bottles and 150 magnums.
93/100
2018 - Brunello di Montalcino: Revealing dark fruit and oak spice, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino leans toward the bolder and bulkier side of the Brunello spectrum. The wine is open-knit and accessible and perhaps further along its evolution than one would like to see in a wine hitting the market now. However, this is a trend I see across the 2018 vintage. The finish reverts to a more gentle side with polished tannins. Production is 40,000 bottles and 500 magnums.
93+/100
2017 - Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve: Here's a new discovery from La Gerla. This wine shows more tannic firmness than we saw in the Brunello annata, and this wine is also more nervous or tightly wound. It just needs a little more bottle evolution before it starts to shine. The bouquet is nicely balanced with dried rose, wild berry, earth and balsam herb. La Gerla does a great job of pulling out the varietal purity of Sangiovese.
93/100
2017 - Brunello di Montalcino: Is silky and polished, offering a nice perspective on a vintage that was not always easy to navigate. This wine manages smooth integration with none of the rougher spots that can sometimes occur in hot and dry growing seasons. The bouquet shows nuanced detail with wild berry, forest floor, grilled herb and wild rose. The wine is firm on the palate with tight stemmy tannins.
94/100
2016 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: Is polished and tightly knit with lots of silky inner shine. The fruit shows good primary intensity with dried cherry and cassis, but this Riserva also accommodates some tertiary or aged aromas of spice, leather and tar. Earthy tones, cola and wild rose are folded into this fresh and elegant Sangiovese. There are some smoky oaky tones that are a little aggressive at first, but they do largely subside.
94+/100
2016 - Brunello di Montalcino: Elegant, tight and streamlined, the La Gerla 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a savory and slightly spicy bouquet. More than fruit, the first tones you get focus on tar, smoke, licorice and mixed herbs. This wine offers a very Mediterranean personality with elegant mineral notes that come out in a second wave. The wine goes through a relatively quick fermentation with about 15 days of skin contact followed by 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks. With more time in the glass, it opens to blue flower, lilac, dried berry and crème de cassis. Production is 40,000 bottles. The team at La Gerla has dedicated much effort over the past year to the difficult fight against mal d'esca (the esca grapevine trunk disease) that is a painful and devastating problem for Italian vintners. They have embarked on a three-year research project with a local university to fight this disease. Hats off to Alberto Passeri and his team for their attention to this dangerous malady.

2016 - Birba IGT: Birba opens to wild berry, forest floor, red currant, licorice and light spice or smoke. This is an informal and food-friendly Tuscan red that happily delivers enough territory-specific character to pair with gnocchi and spinach or thick pici noodles with wild boar ragù. There is a pretty note of sweet cherry on the soft and mild finish. Only 7,000 bottles were made
88/100
2016 - Rosso di Montalcino: Vinous, fruity and slightly raw, the 2016 Rosso di Montalcino offers simple lines and a one-dimensional presentation. There are loads of plump fruit with darker tones of leather and crushed mineral at the back. This wine ages in large oak casks for eight months to firm up its mild structure and texture. Earthy notes appear on the close.
95/100
2015 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: Is a softly textured and fleshed out wine that shows darker and deeper fruit (compared to the 2016 Brunello that I tasted at the same time). This wine makes a great first impression, mostly thanks to that sense of quiet balance. As it opens in the glass, I notice the pretty ripeness of the vintage with dark cherry and summer plum. In all, this Riserva gives us an accessible and rich expression that will perform nicely upon release. Production is 8,560 bottles, and this wine will hit the market in April 2021.

2015 - Brunello di Montalcino: Now we're talking. I tasted the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino after tasting the other samples from La Gerla, and it's amazing how clearly and convincingly that brawny Brunello character comes through. This is a robust and precise wine that shows dark berry fruit, red currant, spice, licorice and grilled herb. I love the way that all that beautiful Sangiovese intensity comes together with immediate focus and clarity. About 40,000 bottles were released. Nice job. You gotta love the way Alberto Passeri describes this successful vintage on the market now: "The 2015 vintage was an exciting one under every point of view, offering us restful nights of sleep and energized days." La Gerla did not produce its Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli in 2014. That was a difficult vintage that I assume made for many sleepless nights. Reviewed by Monica Larner Robertparker.com

2014 - Brunello di Montalcino: It opens to a delicately perfumed bouquet with layers of soft berry fruit and blue flower. You get wild rose, lavender and dried violet. Wait a second or two longer, and you might recognize spicy notes of smoked clove and crushed black pepper. This is a lean to mid-weight effort with fragile aromas and a long, silky mouthfeel. Production is 20,000 bottles strong.
90/100
2013 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: (with just 5,466 bottles made) is a little different, or should I say odd. The bouquet shows more ripeness than I would have expected, with aromas of dried plum and dried cherry skin. The wine's appearance is dark and concentrated. Sour cherry aromas and bitter blackberry offset those more pronounced tones of ripeness that you get at the very beginning. The wine undergoes 15 days of skin maceration, and those fermentation-driven aromas have left their mark.
94/100
2013 - Brunello di Montalcino: The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is elegant, balanced and bright. The pretty luminosity of the wine's appearance helps to underline this positive impression. The bouquet is nuanced and layered with dried fruit aromas that segue to spice, tar and balsam herb. You get sassy aromas of licorice, tar and cola on the close.
87/100
2013 - Rosso di Montalcino: La Gerla's medium-bodied 2013 Rosso di Montalcino shows terrific tones of red fruit, bold cherry, toasted almond and vanilla. This is a fresh and tonic wine and what it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in good cheer and friendliness. Extreme temperature control and 12 months of Slavonian oak aging account for the wine's aromatic freshness and its textural richness. The wine is engineered for immediate consumption.

2012 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: Here is a dense and meaty Tusan red that flaunts its immediate power, structure and intensity. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is robust and deep thanks to a generous offering of dark fruit, spice and tar-like aromas. Fruit is carefully selected for this wine, and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel. Post fermentation, the wine goes into large Slavonian oak casks for four years. The finish is soft and supple with sweet berry flavors. This wine has made an impressive jump forward in this vintage.

2012 - Brunello di Montalcino: Dark fruit with black currant and wild blueberry come into focus. Those fruit tones are aged and evolved for sure, ........

2011 - Brunello di Montalcino: Is a compelling wine that I had the opportunity to taste at intervals several hours after opening the bottle. The wine showed a long and very interesting evolution. Moments after opening the bottle, it presented very dry aromas of pressed rose petal, red currant and dusty mineral. Hours later, the wine had gone into hight gear with more articulate aromas of exotic spice and crushed clove. This fast-paced evolution leads me to believe that this vintage from La Gerla not age as long as the excellent 2010 vintage.
92/100
2010 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli: Shows a plump and round side to the often austere 2010 vintage. This wine is slightly more influenced by baking spice and sweet oak. It is more approachable as a result. It will appeal to those looking for a Brunello Riserva from this celebrated vintage to drink in the medium or long term. The wine is generously redolent of dark cherry, tobacco and spice. It shows yielding textural richness and generous, opulent personality.
94+/100
2010 - Brunello di Montalcino: Dark spice and dried cherry aromas open the bouquet of the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. This may be the best base Brunello I have tasted from La Gerla. The wine is distinguished by a heightened sense of uniformity, especially where the bouquet is concerned. You can easily identify tones of cherry, spice, leather cola and licorice that are typical of the Sangiovese grape. Wait a few minutes, and the wine begins to shows finely etched tones of grilled Mediterranean herb, ash and dried ginger. The nose is penetrating and deep with etched mineral tones at the back. This lovely wine also exhibits silky, long tannins on the smooth finish.

Tight, herbaceous, fresh and precise fruit with noticeable acidity and present, fine tannins, dense and persistent on the palate, smoky traces, some dry herbs, iodine traces, salt in the background, very good depth, elegant style with all its power, a hint of bitter chocolate, very good, tight, herbaceous finish, again with noticeable acidity.
92/100
2016 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: Firm, slightly toasty aroma of ripe red and black berries with cedary and tobacco wood notes, coffee and a hint of bread spices. Ripe, juicy fruit with some toasty and again also slightly tobacco wood, some acid bite and present, ripe, crumbly, sandy tannin, persistent and powerful on the palate, dried herbal notes, a little bread spice, coffee and pepper, lots of power, salty mineral nuances, very good, firm, juicy and spicy finish with grip.
95/100
2019 - Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve: Planted in 1997, La Pieve is a single vineyard in Montalcino’s southeast. The estate waited until the vines were a mature 20 years old before releasing this separate bottling, the first release being the 2017 vintage. This 2019 is the finest thus far. As it emerges from its shell, orange, cedar and liquorice bark rise from the glass. Mellowed and understated in its brambly fruit, it focuses its expression on savoury forest and exotic tea nuances. Full, yet nimbly poised and structured with commanding tannins, the finish is elevated by a salty mineral tang.
93/100
2019 - Brunello di Montalcino: La Gerla’s estate Brunello brings together an even proportion of fruit from holdings in the cool northeastern area of Canalicchio with lots from warmer parcels in Montalcino’s southeast. Exhibiting the estate’s signature unami style, the 2019 is appealingly unpretentious yet complex. Restrained aromas of chestnut and grilled, smoky herbs lead to a wild berry compote laced with clove. It flows easily across the palate, carrying tantalising acidity. Fine powdery tannins build up and close off the finish for now. Give this another year in bottle.
91/100
2018 - Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli: In the area of Canalicchio, Vigna Gli Angeli was planted in 1985. The Riserva is a selection of the best bunches from the highest stretch of the vineyard. This 2018 saw the wine’s typical long ageing in 50 hectolitre Slavonian oak casks. Evolved in aromas, it leads with preserved strawberry, vanilla-steeped prune and dried tobacco. The palate is fresher and brighter than the nose suggests, sporting red berries accented by sweet herbs. Bright in acidity, with a tightness of tannins to match. Nevertheless, this feels ready.
91/100
2017 - Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve: Comes from an eponymous 1.5ha vineyard in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Planted in 1997, it sits at 350 metres on limestone rich Galestro soil. This has a savoury edge which runs through all of La Gerla’s wines, however it demonstrates greater precision and suppleness than the estate Brunello. Clean candied cherry, sweet spice and bitter herbs lead to a fully charged palate with extremely ripe fruit shored up by decisive structure. The tannins stop short of drying out the finish. This really holds everything together admirably. Drinking Window 2023 – 2029
92/100
2010 - Brunello di Montalcino 2010 Very traditional aromas and flavours of underbrush, tobacco, red fruit and herbs. Vibrant acidity and complex spicy undertones on the palate, supported by a great structure and impressive length. A big wine that should age well. Drink 2018-2030
17,25/20
2013 - Rosso di Montalcino: Suave raspberry, coffee, liquorice, violet and underbrush flavours are nicely supported by noble tannins and harminious acidity. Ripe black fruit flavours with hints of thyme and sage - a strong Rosso
